Moving house can be a stressful and emotional experience, but did you know that it can also have consequences for your physical health too?
Everyone who has moved house before knows that it can be extremely tiring, but it also poses a number of possible physical threats that should be taken into careful consideration.
Avoid injuries whilst you move by following our expert health and safety tips!
Don’t Pack Heavy Boxes
It can be tempting to fill a box until it’s completely full and just about closes; you don’t want to waste space after all. Unfortunately, this is only going to make it more difficult when it comes to moving the boxes later on. You shouldn’t make your boxes too heavy, as this will put unnecessary strain on your back when you come to lift them – make them as heavy as you can comfortable carry by yourself.
Use Proper Lifting Techniques
Picking up anything without using a proper (and safe) lifting technique is an injury waiting to happen. Improper lifting is one of the biggest causes of back injuries in the workplace and it’s no different when it comes to doing it within your home! You should keep your object close to your waist for as long as possible and adopt a stable position. This means standing with one leg slightly in front of the over – this will help you maintain a balance. You should also avoid bending your back too – you should slightly bend the back, hips and knees.
Inspect Your Home Regularly
Moving is usually a very busy AND messy time – it’s natural for your home to look like it’s been turned upside down and inside out during the moving period. This means that there is more chance of you falling over something that has been left in a place where it shouldn’t be. To avoid this happening, you should carry out regular inspections around your home – just walk around and make sure that nothing is loitering in a potentially dangerous place! This is especially important on the day of moving out – make sure there is a clear path for the movers!
Ask for Help
Moving home is something that you shouldn’t attempt to do on your own – there is far too much work involved. You should ask for help from friends and family, even if it’s just to help you move the boxes! Your loved ones can provide you with support (both physical and emotional) that will guarantee that your day runs a lot more smoothly!
