Moving house is definitely stressful, but you can make it a lot easier with a little forward planning and preparation. In the weeks leading up to the big move, it’s important to get as much sorted as possible.

Most people say that the problem is often getting started – what do you tackle first? To make things a little easier for you, we’ve put together some expert moving house tips!

Book Your Removal Company Early

You should book your removal company as soon as you can – this can be done as soon as you have your moving date. Booking them in advanced means that you’re more likely to get them on the day that you want and at your preferred time.

A lot of people see moving house as a fresh start, which is a really good way to look at it. You don’t have to take everything you own with you, especially things that you never use anymore. Think about your new home and the space available, this will help you decide what you need and don’t need. We suggest starting early as it can take quite a long time. Separate everything in your house into four different piles; keeping, selling, donating and throwing away. This will make the process a lot smoother.

Inform Everyone Who Needs to Know

There are lots of people who will need to know that you’re moving – this should be done sooner rather than later. People such as your utility companies and TV and Broadband providers will want to be notified of your leaving day at least 4 weeks before, so that they can send you your final bill. You’ll also need to notify your bank and credit card company, doctors and dentist, and also schools and work. This is so they know to send future post to your new address.

Round up the Troops

Moving can be hard physical work, therefore the more people helping the better! We suggest asking people for help as soon as you know your moving date, to make sure that your friends and family are available. You may even want to ask for help with the de-cluttering!

Make a Survival Pack for Moving Day

The day you move will be long, tiring and stressful. Therefore, we think it’s a really good idea to make yourself a survival pack to help you get through the day. This will include everything that you will need for that day. We suggest items such as cleaning products, bread, milk, snacks, tea and coffee, a kettle, charger and toiletries. You can personalise your survival box to suit your needs (you might have some stuff at the new house), but this is generally what they include.
